Full-time Gladue Writer, Indigenous Justice Program

 

Principles and Beliefs:

Indigenous People require equitable treatment in the justice system, access to the legal and related resources within the justice system, as well as an understanding of the system and their options. The support required includes advocacy in all areas of the law as well as alternatives which can break the cycles of recidivism and dependency which is all too prevalent. These alternatives are more effective when they are community controlled and are based on the traditional cultural norms and values of the Indigenous community.

 

Job purpose:

The Gladue Writer at the Indigenous Justice Program under the Newfoundland Aboriginal Women’s Network (NAWN) plays a critical role in supporting the Indigenous community through the judicial process by crafting comprehensive Gladue Reports. These reports are instrumental in informing the courts about the unique circumstances of Indigenous offenders and suggesting culturally relevant sentencing alternatives. This position requires a deep commitment to understanding the social history of Indigenous peoples, strong research and writing skills, and the ability to empathetically engage with clients and their families. Upholding the values of compassion, respect, and professionalism, the Gladue Writer helps advance the mission of NAWN in strengthening community capacity to address justice issues.

 

Duties and responsibilities

 • Write Gladue Reports for Indigenous offenders awaiting sentencing; work will include interviewing clients at correctional centre facilities and/or in community.

• Researching relevant issues and developing recommendations for consideration by the court.

• Meet with the accused person or other individuals to prepare and write the Gladue Report.

• To liaise with Indigenous and Non-Indigenous resources/service providers for the purpose of preparing a well-organized report.

• Prepare and submit all reports by deadlines as required.

• Attend sentencing hearings for clients if possible

• Attend Gladue Training sessions, designed to align the team on Gladue methods and objectives.

• Further develop knowledge regarding community resources (Indigenous & non-Indigenous) available to indigenous offenders.

• Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

• Excellent interviewing and writing skills.

• Ability to work with a wide range of individuals.

• Ability to work independently and manage a regular caseload of clients.

• Knowledge of the criminal justice system and programs and services available to Indigenous people in Newfoundland and Labrador would be a great asset.

• Professional courses such as Mental health First Aid, Safe Talk training, Assist training, Trauma informed training.

• Gladue Writer training  

 

Employment Details:

Full-time until June 30, 2025, with possibility of extension.

Position located in Stephenville, NL.

Drivers Licence and Vehicle required.

Travel allowances for out-of-town travel.

Wellness and Community Support Worker

We are hiring a full-time Wellness and Community Support Worker that will: support the creation and delivery of culturally responsive and respectful culturally appropriate trauma-informed health and wellness supports for individuals who have been impacted by the issue and matter of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) in Canada. The health and wellness support services and programs will be available to anyone affected by the issue of MMIWG residing on the island portion of Newfoundland and Labrador including all First Nations, Inuit, Metis peoples. In addition, there will be a focus on supporting families, survivors of gender-based violence, 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals and communities, and anyone affected by the issue of MMIWG or gender-based violence.


Skills:

  • Must be a licensed clinical social worker or professional Counsellor.

  • Experience providing individual counseling and facilitating support groups

  • Knowledge and understanding of trauma-focused therapy.

  • Knowledge and understanding of family systems and strength-based approach to practice.

  • Experience working with survivors of intimate partner and family violence, sexual trauma, and child abuse is required

  • Knowledge and understanding of the cycle of violence and safety planning.

  • Knowledge and understanding of community resources.

  • Be a team member and participate in organizations initiatives.

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and with traditional ceremonies

  • Must provide a Criminal record and Vulnerable Sector check.

  • Must have regular access to a vehicle, there will be some travel within the region and province, travel allowances for out-of-town travel.

Advocacy Project Coordinator

This position is located in Stephenville and will start as soon as possible, with an end date of March 31, 2026.


The Project Coordinator will identify advocacy challenges and opportunities, policy research, and analysis.They will be responsible for the development, assistance and implementation of practices that will enable NAWN to offer support and advocacy for the ongoing development of culturally relevant policies, legislation, and best practices that positively impact Indigenous women and their families, especially concerning Gender-Based Violence Prevention.


The Advocacy Project Coordinator will work a standard workweek but must work some evenings and weekends to meet project milestones and commitments with NAWN. There is travel within the province, and your own vehicle is needed—travel allowances for out-of-town travel.

Mental Health Counsellor

We would like to hire a Mental Health Counsellor to work with us in our office. This is a term position until March 31, 2025. 

The successful individual will work from our office located at 90 Main Street, Stephenville, to provide mental health counseling and group programming for Indigenous people. Work hours will include a combination of weekdays, weekends and evenings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To engage constructively and respectfully with individuals of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, abilities, and identities.

  • Provide individual and group therapy to adults and children, including, but not limited to working concurrently with parents and/or other service providers.

  • Assessment of the client’s psychological, emotional, and physical status.

  • Assessment of the level of danger the client faces and all safety risks.

  • Confidentially maintain client files as per organizational policies and procedures.

  • Advocate for clients, initiating strategies that will guide the client toward therapeutic solutions.

  • Function as a team member to develop case plans that meet the client’s needs.

  • Network to develop collaborative relationships with relevant government and community agencies to build community capacity and link clients to support services.

  • Participate in the evaluation of the program's effectiveness and efficiency and work for continual improvement of services.
