Remembering Our Sisters Through Community

“Remembering Our Sisters Through Community”, was brought to the community by the Newfoundland Aboriginal Women’s Network (NAWN) with funding from the MMIWG Commemoration Fund and the Department of Women and Gender Equality (WAGE).

The project objectives were to work in collaboration with family members of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) to respectfully create a memorial to the lives and legacies of these women in various communities in the Bay St. George area.

This included building Healing Gardens in four communities, a full day cultural community event in five communities both involve a bringing together of survivors, family members, community members and Elders to remember our MMIWG, to celebrate their lives, to bring awareness, and to continue the journey of healing through our culture and ceremonies.

There was also a workshop developed and delivered in five communities which focused on:

  • Healthy and Unhealthy Relationships

  • Respect

  • Consent

  • Self-Care

  • Resources available within the communities
